Olea europaea Elit-5
Selected coldhardy olive variety Elit-5 from Botanical Garden - Plovdiv, Bulgaria
We have tested over 100 varieties of olives from all around the world. In these tests we have selected the most cold-hardy varieties.
The variety we offer now is called by our customers Elite- 5. The fruits are small with very good oil content. They can be used for extraction of oil.
If in your area the figs are large trees and very rarely freeze to the ground, this means that you have very real chance to grow large olive tree in your yard. The cold-hardy olives most often freeze almost to the ground during the first 1-2 winters, until the underground parts get wider enough. Later the freeze damage from the winters are rare.
Suitable areas for growing olives are south of Kresna, Rhodope base from Belovo to Rhodope slopes south of Parvomai, and especially the area between the Parvenetz and Asenovgrad. Also the southern coast of the Black Sea, most southern slopes of Stara Planina, places near Svilengrad and Ivaylovgrad. It is worth to mention also the hills of Plovdiv and the city centers of major cities in southern Bulgaria, maybe even the city center of Sofia.
In the colder areas not listed above, there are some places with warmer microclimate, which are well known by local people. Anyway in Bulgaria figs are grown for a long time and they can be a guide. If your fig trees freeze down to the gorund every few years, then your olive will probably freeze too.
