Morus hybrid Shangri La, Mulberry
Morus hybrid Shangri La, Mulberry
The Shangri La variety is recognized as one of the best mulberry varieties in the world, and there is a reason for that. The trees are extremely vigorous, and the fruits are very large and taste wonderful. The fruits are packed with useful substances and antioxidants, and are mainly used for fresh consumption, but they are also used to make very tasty sweets and jams. Ripening begins in May and often continues into June, with all fruits ripening in about 4-6 weeks.
The trees are completely cold-resistant for Bulgaria's climate. The fruits develop on the new branches of the spring growth, therefore pruning in early spring is advisable in order to shorten last year's branches and thus stimulate branching and more abundant fruiting.
The plants on sale are intended for planting in the ground, so they are planted in regular garden soil, which greatly hepls for establishing in the ground.

Roselle, Tea Hibiscus, Karkade
Hibiscus sabdariffa (Roselle, Tea Hibiscus, Karkade)
The famous hibiscus tea is better known in Bulgaria with the Arabic name "Karkade". But few people know that karkade plants can also be grown successfully in Bulgaria. Seeds are sown in pots in early spring. At the end of April, they are planted directly in the ground. Before the end of the summer flowering begins, after that the flowers are collected and dried throughout the summer (as shown in one of the photos). A few flowers are allowed to set seed and mature so that there will be seed for the following year. So everyone can make their own karkade tea.
Karkade tea has been known since ancient times. It contains many valuable ingredients - a large amount of polyphenols, anthocyanins, flavonoids and pigments, but last but not least - a large amount of antioxidants. From our own experience, we can confirm that the daily consumption of a glass of cold tea from karkade without sugar, regulates and lowers blood pressure.
Karkade tea can be made hot or cold. Most of the valuable ingredients are preserved in cold tea. In 300 ml of water put 4-5 dried flowers of karkade, and if desired you can add a slice of ginger, a little lemon juice or lime. The tea is also great without sugar, but can be sweetened to your taste. The tea is stored for a few hours in the fridge and the next morning it will be deep red in color.

Pomegranate var.2 M
Punica granatum, Pomegranate var. 2
During the period 1950-1990, in Bulgaria were made many experiments with subtropical fruit crops. Quite a few experimental stations were created throughout the country and they had big plantations of tangerines, olives, pomegranates, figs, persimmons, pistachios and others.
In these plantations, the most valuable varieties were tested and selected and the most essential was their cold tolerance. Varieties of a whole "Eastern bloc" were delivered - from Russia to Afghanistan. After political changes, all these plantations were abandoned. Some were destroyed, others were left to run wild without any care.
During our visits to these places, we have selected the most durable and valuable varieties, that not only had excellent fruit, but were fairly dry and frost tolerant to survive a decade after abandonment. Of the former plantation with pomegranate near Lozenets (Bourgas), we managed to save two varieties with excellent fruits with high sugar content and very good taste. Unfortunately, their names are unknown. Therefore we are presenting them as variety 1 and variety 2.
