Pomegranate Super Hardy, Var. 3
Punica granatum Super Hardy

Super Hardy, also known as Var. 3, is a medium-sized, yellowish-pink, sour taste, in most cases. The plants can withstand temperatures up to -21°C.

During the period 1950-1990, in Bulgaria were made many experiments with subtropical fruit crops. Quite a few experimental stations were created throughout the country and they had big plantations of tangerines, olives, pomegranates, figs, persimmons, pistachios and others.

In these plantations, the most valuable varieties were tested and selected and the most essential was their cold tolerance. Varieties of a whole "Eastern bloc" were delivered - from Russia to Afghanistan. After political changes, all these plantations were abandoned. Some were destroyed, others were left to run wild without any care.

During our visits to these places, we have selected the most durable and valuable varieties, that not only had excellent fruit, but were fairly dry and frost tolerant to survive a decade after abandonment. Of the former plantation with pomegranate near Lozenets (Bourgas), we managed to save two varieties with excellent fruits with high sugar content and very good taste. Unfortunately, their names are unknown. Therefore we are presenting them as variety 1 and variety 2.

Ever green tree-bush, which reaches up to 3m. height, with attractive pink blossoms with deep red stamens.

• Cold resistance to -10 ° C, but for optimum fruiting, it is recommended that temperatures do not fall below -5 ° C. It can be grown in a pot and to be kept in a greenhouse in the cold months.

• The fruits are large, oval, about 220g. Cross-pollination - with Triumph variety, is recommended for the formation of larger berries.

Good to know: Cross pollination between two (or more) different varieties will ensure good fruit set and fruit quality.

• Place at half day to full sun, completely protected from wind. Provide a well-drained soil, regular fertilization during the growing season.

• Blooming time - June.

• Ripening time - November.

Ingredients: Iron salts, magnesium salts, acidifying ions, additional minerals.

Application: Dissolve 1 tablespoon in 1 gallon of tap water and water the plants abundantly every 2  to 4 weeks. In case of severely damaged plants, apply the fertilizer every 2 weeks until green and  quality new growth is developped! Could be applied all year round to potted plants. Use with caution to avoid rust spots on any surrounding surfaces! Please note, that this fertilizer will affect mostly the new growth, not the old leaves that are already damaged. Do not overdose!

Storage: In a tightly closed package, in a dry and dark place. Durability: 2 years.

Net: 10.5 oz (300 gr)

Punica granatum, Pomegranate var. Wonderful

Wonderful is the most famous Pomegranate variety. The one against all others are measured.
Fruits are very large, with bright-red coloration. Segments are red, juicy. The fruits ripen in September.
This variety grows well in highly alkaline soils where other plants would not survive.
