These palms have a reputation to be quite cold hardy. In fact, they grow near Assenovgrad, Bulgaria (zone 7b) since 2008 with no protection at all. These are interesting shrubby palms for our area. Even after a really bad freeze, they will always regrow from the ground and recover in a couple of months.

As a desert palm, 'Etna' needs plenty of sun light. When watered and fertilized regularly, they will show an excellent growth.

If there is a palm that will easily recover in pot after being forgotten and not watered in time, this is the Chamaerops. It will take dry air, dust and even somewhat lower light.

This palm could stay in the same pot for many years.

For optimal growth it should be moved outside in summer and watered abundantly.

In winter it needs cool temperatures, below +10°C. It will also grow in open ground in some areas of Bulgaria.

This Trachycarpus species is close to the regular Trachycarpus fortunei in terms of cold hardiness. It grows with just a little protection in places in southern Bulgaria, located outside the winter freezing inversions. It has very beautiful and hard leaves, that are very wind resistant.

About growing requirements it is like the regular Trachycarpus fortunei.

The Canary Island Date Palm comes from deserted areas on the Canary islands. Despite it's powerful root system, it does not tolerate drought, when grown in pot. This is easily visible, when the leaf tips start to turn yellow and dry. In winter it should be kept cool, down to 0 degrees Celsius. It needs much sun to be able to develop it's full glory. If the surrounding air is very dry, this palm will still thrive, as long as it is watered regularly. 

This size of Canary Island Date Palm comes in a small container. If they are not moved immediately to a bigger container, they need to be watered during summer at least once a day.

Pony Tail Palm
Beaucarnea recurvata, Nolina

The ponytail palm also known as elephant's foot is plant looking like a palm with desert origin. It develop a large, bulbous-shaped stem, wich retaining a lot of water in its foundation. The leaves are long, narrow and wavy, and falling freely down creates the illusion of a ponytail on a horse or fountain. The plant remains small when grown indoors.

Attention! Delivery abroad is not possible due to over-size.

There are two species in the genus Washingtonia and this one has thicker trunk, bigger crown and greater cold hardiness. The both species are the fastest growing palms in Bulgaria. They need direct sun and regular watering and feeding.

Ingredients: Iron salts, magnesium salts, acidifying ions, additional minerals.

Application: Dissolve 1 tablespoon in 1 gallon of tap water and water the plants abundantly every 2  to 4 weeks. In case of severely damaged plants, apply the fertilizer every 2 weeks until green and  quality new growth is developped! Could be applied all year round to potted plants. Use with caution to avoid rust spots on any surrounding surfaces! Please note, that this fertilizer will affect mostly the new growth, not the old leaves that are already damaged. Do not overdose!

The Pigmy Date palm is perfect for growing in pot.
