The ponytail palm also known as elephant's foot is plant looking like a palm with desert origin. It develop a large, bulbous-shaped stem, wich retaining a lot of water in its foundation. The leaves are long, narrow and wavy, and falling freely down creates the illusion of a ponytail on a horse or fountain. The plant remains small when grown indoors.

Important notice! Most citrus plants on the market are produced for planting in orchards in the Mediterranean countries. They have a large overall height, have high graft and are difficult to shape and support at home. Rootstocks on which they are grafted are very fast growing, which is fine for the open ground in the subtropics, but is not desirable when growing in pot in the temperate climate.

All our small citrus plants are produced specifically for the Bulgarian market and are ideally suited for home cultivation. The rootstocks cause compact growth, grafts are low and this allows making an excellent shape of the crown, to be suitable for growing in pots. The used rootstocks are trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon') and Volkamer lemon, Citrus volkameriana. Trifoliate orange is frost-hardy to -25°C, and significantly increases the cold resistance of plants grafted on it.

The Caffin Mandarin was discovered in 1968. in Morocco by M. Kaffin. This variety has moderate growth. The plants develop a thick crown, with straight branches and narrow, deep green leaves. Starts fruiting very early. There is a prolonged floweringin, that ensures long-lasting harvest. Gives constant, average yield. Fruits are smaller, with slightly wrinkled, deep orange, medium thin crust. Oval, spherical shape, slightly flattened, 6-7cm. size, 8 to 9 seed segments, no seeds. The flesh is saturated in color, juicy and slightly sweet. It ripens early in October.

As with all other Citrus plants, the mandarin is susceptible to scales and spider mites and needs to be sprayed twice a year.
In winter it will need a cool place with temperatures 0-10 degrees Celsius.
​If the temperature is higher, the leaves usually fall off. In summer it needs to be outside and abundantly watered.

Giant Taro is a well-known tropical plant. Usualy grown as an internal plant. Extremely attractive with its flowers and dark green leaves that allow it to grow well even in low light conditions.
The plant causes an eating disorder in humans if consumed unprocessed, but the interesting fact is that more than three hundred million people rely precisely on the trefoil as the main food source. All parts of the plant are edible after proper heat treatment.

This is not a palm. Bananas are a monocotyledonous family of plants (Musaceae), that are closer to the grasses and have nothing to do with palms. From a botanical point of view, these are giant grasses. They develop a strong underground root mass called rhizome.

Musa Dajiao was obtained by crossing Musa sikkimensis and Musa balbisiana. The fruits of this type of banana can be consumed fresh and used in cooking. In order for your banana to bear fruit, the stems and rhizome must be protected in winter. Depending on the climat zone you can use passive or active protection, just like palm trees.

It is recommended that the plants be planted in the spring.

As with other bananas, its leaves do not withstand cold, damage at temperatures below -2 ° C, and stems damage at -7 to -8 ° C. The rhizome can hibernate well underground if it is well insulated in severe colds.Bananas grow extremely fast. Even after full frost in winter, in just one summer they can reach between 3 and 5 meters in height, forming many stems and huge leaves.

Bananas grow very fast. Even after complete freezing of the green parts, in just a single growing season it will re-grow as a small banana forest with 3 to 5 meters of height. Of course, under the bananas the shade is thick.

Kentia palms are among the most beautiful palms that are grown in the Mediterranean. They have gentle and graceful leaves and for many people they remind of the coconut palm trees in the tropics.

Australian lime or caviar is a native of the coastal border region of Queensland and New South Wales, Australia.

This is a thorny shrub or small tree with edible fruits. Theyr flesh is a set of globular vesicles, also called pearls, which is why the plants are called caviar.

Тhe peel is rough and thin, not easily injured and can be dried and use as a flavouring spice.

Akebia quinata, also known as a Chocolate vine, is a cold resistant, climbing plant, typical of China Japan and Korea. The leaves are green, oval-shaped, and grow in clusters of five. Chocolate-purple flowers bloom in the spring. Flowers are monoecious, with both staminate (male) and pistillate (female) flowers appearing in the same raceme. The plant produce a fruits with an elongated shape and a purple hue in summer which split open in fall. The fruit ripen in late fall. The whitish pulp is edible, but not very palatable. The plants prefers sunny places, but develops well in the shade and drained, sandy loam soil.

Attention: Unripe fruits are poisonous!!!

Hybrid Lavender, Lavandula x intermedia 'Grosso'

This French hybrid Lavender is fully cold hardy in Bulgaria. It is grown for its dark purple flowers, silvery-green leaves and faster growth. This plant is excellent pasture for bees.

Lavender needs well drained soils. Heavy clay soils that have poor air mode and a large moisture retention ability are not suitable for growing lavender.

Rosemary tolerates temperatures down to around -15 degrees Celsius without serious problems, and even a lot lower - when buried under the snow. An important factor for good cold tolerance is the well drained soil which does not hold excess water. Heavy clay soils, especially in cold regions are not suitable for growing rosemary.

Fatsia japonica 'Moseri', Japanese Aralia

This magnificent evergreen plant is not new for Bulgaria. It grows in southern Bulgaria and around the Black Sea coast, as long as temperatures rarely fall below -15 degrees Celsius. It also grows in some places in colder areas such as Ichtiman or Sofia, where there area few large and fruit-bearing plants. Fatsia must be planted in the shade, otherwise leaves get burned by the summer sun and will turn black.

The 'Moseri' variety has a more dense crown, more compact growth and better cold resistance. These subtropical plants bloom in early winter, and their fruits ripen in May. The berries are small and inedible and have only decorative value.

Fatsia is also known under the name Aralia. It has been grown in many homes and is now scientifically proven that its large leaves purify the air by some poisonous gases like formaldehyde, for example.

Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis', Giant golden Vivax bamboo

This giant bamboo is one of the most cold hardy of the large bamboos and is a very popular bamboo. It could reach up to 16 m.

The Golden Vivax bamboo is cold resistant down to at least -18°C, but its rhizome could survive after at least -25°C. However, in colder areas, where temperatures regularily drop below -18°C, this bamboo could hardly get taller than 8-10 meters, after many years. In areas outside of the temperature inversions in southern Bulgaria, the Golden Vivax bamboo could reach its full potential and more than 12 meters of height.

It is important to regularily water and fertilize the bamboo. This bamboo tolerates lime soil quite well.

The Canary Island Date Palm comes from deserted areas on the Canary islands. Despite it's powerful root system, it does not tolerate drought, when grown in pot. This is easily visible, when the leaf tips start to turn yellow and dry. In winter it should be kept cool, down to 0 degrees Celsius. It needs much sun to be able to develop it's full glory. If the surrounding air is very dry, this palm will still thrive, as long as it is watered regularly. 

The seeds need to be placed in a well drained substrate, where they will germinate in a month time.

The Umbrella Papyrus is a water plant and is a beautiful addition to small water spots or lakes. It should stay in a pot in our climate and should be brought indoors, in a cool place where in winter does not fall below zero.

Rosa banksiae 'Lutea', Yellow Lady Banks Rose

This is an interesting citrus of high ornamental value. It bears fruits that resemble mandarins. On the background of the tiny leaves, they stand out and the plant looks like covered by fruits. Regardless of their acidic taste, the fruits are used in many ways, especially in southern Italy, where they are used as a spice in a variety of local drinks, for example Campari.

Tangelo varieties are hybrids between Tangerine (Citrus reticulata) and Pomelo or Grapefruit. Fruits are deep orange. The flesh is firm, juicy and flavorful, with a very pleasant and specific taste.

Characteristic of the fruit of Tangelo Minneola are:

This is probably the most beautiful flowering tree!

No wonder, why in Japan they write poetry about these trees. Their flowers are so gentle and beautiful, that whoever seen them live, will never forget.

Citrus limon red, Lemon red

This is still a very rare Citrus variety all around the world. In many countries, this new hybridit still has not been seen live. The plants are well developed and come to you loaded with flowers or fruits, according to the season.

The taste of the red lemons is less acidic if compared with that of the yellow lemons. The fruits are used in the same way, but are especially valuable in their appearance.

This variety is grown as all other citrus plants. It is best to overwinter the plants in a cool place, below +10 deg C.

Trachycarpus 'Bulgaria', 30 fresh seeds packet

The seeds were collected from genuine exemplars of Trachycarpus 'Bulgaria' located in Assenovgrad, near Plovdiv. They have never seen any protection during the winters. The owner Kiril Donov planted the palms back in 1999 from seeds, collected from the famous genuine exemplars, growing in front of the police station in the Sunny beach resort, near the Black Sea coast.

Originally, these parent palms have male parent from Sochi, Russia and the female parent was from the museum palms in Plovdiv. The male parent from Sochi was Trachycarpus excelsa, as described in the Russian scientific literature. Today Trachycarpus excelsa is clasified inside the species Trachycarpus fortunei.

The palms in Bulgaria experience extremely freezing weather almost each winter. Still, they seed freely around the mother plant's bases. When the small seedlings survive, they develop the cold hardiness in the future generations.

Please note, that these seeds are only available from Christmas until the end of March each year! The usual germination is between 80-95 %.

Brahea edulis, Guadalupe Palm

This palm species have a reputation to be cold hardy. It has already proved it by successfuly overwintering for many years around Plovdiv, Bulgaria (zone 7a) with Christmas lights.

As a palm of semi-desert origin, it needs plenty of sun. When watered and fertilized regularily, it will show a very good growth. But still, this is a very slow growing palm, pretty much like the Jubaea.

These palms have a reputation to be quite cold hardy. In fact, they grow near Assenovgrad, Bulgaria (zone 7b) since 2008 with no protection at all. These are interesting shruby palms for our area. Even after a really bad freeze, they will always regrow from the ground and recover in a couple of months.

As a desert palm, 'Etna' needs plenty of sun. When watered and fertilized regularily, they will show an excellent growth.
