This Male Fig will pollinate all Fig varieties! If there is no pollination, the fruits will remain smaller and with worse quality, than the pollinated fruits. For comparison, please see the picture with cut fruits, the bigger ones are pollinated. The smaller ones are not pollinated.

The common fig is a species of the genus Ficus (Ficus) in Mulberry family (Moraceae). In the genus Ficus there are about 2,000 tropical and subtropical species - trees, shrubs and lianas distributed almost worldwide.
The fruit of all species of Ficus tree is the Fig (syconium), enlarged fleshy and hollow inside, with plenty of tightly arranged flowers on the inner wall. True fruits are the tiny fruits inside, which result from these multiple flowers.
The problem is that these flowers appear in the interior of the figs . How are they pollinated ?
That's the funny thing about these plants. Fig (Ficus carica) and several similar species form two types of fruit : edible figs ( FIGs ) and male figs ( Kaprifigi , Caprifigs). Male figs (Caprifigs) accept the Fig pollinator - fig wasp Blastophaga, which lays its eggs in the female flowers of Caprifigs. Male fig wasp grows, multiplies and dies inside the Caprifig, where it was hatched. The female wasp goes outside the Caprifig through the hole (eye), collecting much pollen at this time. It flies in search of a new fruit at the right stage of development where they lay their eggs.

Fruit Caprifigs (male figs) are usually dry, spongy and sticky or just - inedible ! But they play an important role to help the female fig varieties produce two or any crops.

Caprifigits (male figs) are usually born three crops a year, called Profiki (Profichi), Mamma (Mamme) and Mammoni (Mammoni).

Edible figs (FIGs) had two harvests called Breba (Breba) and main crop.

Edible fig varieties (FIGs) are divided into three types:

1. Smyrna figs, they need pollination to ever set a crop.
2 . The Common figs. No need for pollination, to set crops. Most cultivars fall into this group. For example, Black Mission, Brown Turkey, Celeste, Brunswick, Michurinska-10 and Adriatic.
3 . Intermediate group or San Pedro (San Pedro). Figs, which do not need pollination to set the first crop (Breba), but require pollination for the main crop (in most cases).

Freeze damage starts at temperatures below -18 to -20 degrees C, and the trees freeze to the ground at temperatures below -24 degrees

Crinum asiaticum, Crinum lily, Spider lily

The Crinum lily originates from East Asia, Australia and numerous islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Nowadays it is a widespread ornamental species that is planted everywhere in countries with warm climates.

Crinum is a perennial plant that reaches a height of about a meter. The bases of the leaves form a thick stem, which increases in height and thickness with each passing year. The leaves are large, delicate and very beautiful, as the leaf crowns give a very exotic look to the plants.

The flowers appear after 3-4 years. They are white in color, with a very pleasant and intense exotic aroma. After flowering, large seeds are formed, from which the plants can be propagated.

Crinum lily is an easy to grow plant. It grows easily in all conditions - in the sun and in the shade. If grown all year round indoors, it should be placed by the window. This plant does not withstand freezing temperatures.

Important notice! Aloe vera leaves contain Aloin (a yellowish liquid inside the leaf) that has a strong laxative effect and must be removed before consuming them.

Cyrtostachys renda – the Lipstick Palm or Red sealing wax palm

Cyrtostachys renda is one of the most exotic and striking palms in the world, famous for its glossy red leaf stalks and trunks that look as if they were dipped in bright lipstick – hence its popular names “Lipstick Palm” or “Sealing Wax Palm.” Its natural habitat includes the tropical swamps and coastal forests of Sumatra, Borneo, Malaysia, and Southern Thailand, where it is considered a symbol of prestige and beauty.

In the wild, Cyrtostachys renda forms elegant clumps of not very tall stems and is cherished both in private gardens and as an accent in parks and public landscapes. The plants offered for sale are three years old and have been grown in our nursery here in Bulgaria. Some of them have already started to produce offshoots. The first one to two years are the most difficult when cultivating this palm species. A larger plant develops a significantly stronger root system and grows better under our conditions.

Cultivation at home:

• Light: prefers bright, indirect light; should not be exposed to direct midday sun.

• Temperature: a warmth-loving palm from the equatorial climate, sensitive to cold. Year-round warm conditions are optimal, as temperatures below 20°C may cause damage.

• Watering: loves moisture and does not tolerate drought. The soil should be kept evenly moist.

• Soil reaction: requires acidic soil. Regular fertilization with iron sulfate is necessary several times a year. In areas with calcareous (lime-rich) water, fertilization with iron sulfate should be done once a month at a concentration of 3–4 g per liter of water.

• Humidity: high air humidity is essential for maintaining its beautiful appearance.

• Growth: slow-growing, but steady under the right conditions.

Cyrtostachys renda is not easy to cultivate outside the tropics, but if provided with sufficient warmth, moisture, and light, it rewards the grower with unmatched ornamental value. This is a plant that does not simply decorate a home, but transforms any space into a true tropical oasis.

Pandanus amaryllifolius – the aromatic secret of Southeast Asia

Pandanus amaryllifolius is an evergreen plant from the genus Pandanus – a large family of over 700 species, commonly known as “screw pines” because of the characteristic spiral arrangement of their leaves. In nature, some members of the genus grow to the size of trees and are used for weaving, construction, and even as natural fragrances. Our humble Pandanus amaryllifolius, however, is most highly valued in the kitchen – its leaves carry a unique aroma that lies at the heart of traditional gastronomy in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. This species was developed through centuries of human selection and is not known in the wild. Unlike its wild relatives, the edible pandan has no spines on its leaves.

Izmir fig has a superb taste that can not be easily described. The meat is very tender, juicy and sweet. The taste is balanced, really great.

This fig grows and produces two crops quite well in the conditions of southern Bulgaria. It grows vigorously and reaches large size. This fig will produce main crop without pollination, but as with all figs, pollination gives far better results. The picture shows not pollinated and pollinated fruits. Larger fruit is pollinated. Its taste is completely different, much better.

A huge fallacy about the King Sago is that they are difficult and demanding plants. This fallacy is supported by the wrong growing advices, that people receive at the flower shops.

The King Sago is a very easy to grow plant. What they need is regular watering and fertilizing. During the summer they need to be moved outside to a very bright light and should get at least 2-3 hours direct sun. During the winter they should be stored in a cool place with plenty of light.

Its cultivation follows the principle of all other citrus trees, requiring abundant watering at least once a day in the summer, and twice a day on the hottest days.

In autumn, it is brought inside in a dry and cool place, with temperatures in the range of 1-15 degrees. In the spring, after it warms up and there are no nighttime sub-zero temperatures, it can be taken outside to start the formation of flowers and fruits. Flowering begins in February-March, and the ripening of the fruits is up to 6m.

Important notice! Most citrus plants on the market are produced for planting in orchards in the Mediterranean countries. They have a large overall height, have high graft and are difficult to shape and support at home. Unshiu Mandarin (Satsuma, Tangerine) is the earliest mandarin on the market. These are the mandarins which you probably buy each year in October and November. They are generally seedless, peel very easily, and the taste is sweet, but also slightly sour.

Characteristic of the fruits of the Unshiu (Satsuma) mandarin are:

•      - strong flavor
•      - juicy and with high sugar content
•      - moderate acidity
•      - very thin peel
•      - 8 to 12 segments
•      - very early, ripen in October-November
•      - seedless

Besides its valuable qualities, Tangerine Unshiu (Satsuma) is among the most cold resistant edible citruse after Kalamondin and Kumquat. When grafted on trifoliate orange, Trifoliata (Poncirus trifoliata), it will withstand short cold snap to -9°C,  and with some damage on the leaves and young branches trees will withstand -12°C.

It is an absolute internet speculation, that there are other edible citrus varieties that withstand more cold, like the boasted orange hybrid US119 or Sanford F2 Curafora, which are less cold hardy than Kalamondin and Kumquat, or at the very best - equally cold hardy. Growing them outdoors without protection is not possible anywhere in Bulgaria. This was proved by our experiments since 1999 till now in the region of Assenovgrad.

This wonderful variety was discovered on the Italian island of Ischia, north of Naples. Ripe fruits are green in color, small, with a dark red and very tasty fleshy part. The "eye" is completely closed, which is why it is very rare to find rotten fruits. The variety is drought-resistant, but under irrigated conditions it produces larger and better-quality fruits. If not picked in time, the overripe fruits often dry on the tree without any deterioration in quality.

The Green Ischia variety does not need pollination. It gives two crops, the first crop (breba) is abundant and with large fruits, but in some years it is missing. The main crop is also abundant, the fruits remain smaller in size, but they are much tastier than those of the first harvest. The trees have very good cold resistance.

These palms have a reputation to be quite cold hardy. In fact, they grow near Assenovgrad, Bulgaria (zone 7b) since 2005 with no protection at all. These are interesting shruby palms for our area. Even after a really bad freeze, they will always regrow from the ground and recover in a couple of months.

As a desert palm, Cerifera needs plenty of sun. When watered and fertilized regularily, they will show an excellent growth.

Strelitzia augusta, White Bird of Paradise

Great White Strelitzia. This African plant is very easy to grow in pots. The plants have been produced at our nursery in Plovdiv. They are drought resistant, but in summer love regular and heavy irrigations. They prefer direct sun and tolerate it without problems.

Strelitzias can be kept for a long time without replanting, if you feed them regularly. From the base of the stem new shoots will appear, that may be separated or left for the formation of a dense crown.

If there is a palm that will easily recover in pot after being forgotten and not watered in time, this is the Chamaerops. It will take dry air, dust and even somewhat lower light.

This palm could stay in the same pot for many years.

For optimal growth it should be moved outside in summer and watered abundantly.

In winter it needs cool temperatures, below +10°C. It will also grow in open ground in some areas of Bulgaria.

Ginkgo biloba

The Mexican Fan Palm is among the fastest growing palms. If planted in the ground in south Bulgaria, a small plant of total size of one meter will easily grow to a meter of trunk with base circumference of more than a meter. And this in just 3-4 years.

An exceptionally easy palm to grow, both in the open ground or in pot.

Magnolia grandiflora Gallisoniensis, Evergreen Southern Magnolia

Magnolias take many years to bloom from seed. Our evergreen Magnolias are grafted and bloom immediately or next summer. Moreover, the variety Gallisoniensis has a beautiful dark green leaves. These are Magnolias, that you have probably seen everywhere in Italy and France.

These Magnolias grow without any problems anywhere in southern Bulgaria and along the Black Sea coast. But they will grow in quite a few places in Sofia and northern Bulgaria.

Important notice! Most citrus plants on the market are produced for planting in orchards in the Mediterranean countries. They have a large overall height, have high graft and are difficult to shape and support at home. Rootstocks on which they are grafted are very fast growing, which is fine for the open ground in the subtropics, but is not desirable when growing in pot in the temperate climate.

All our small citrus plants are produced specifically for the Bulgarian market and are ideally suited for home cultivation. The rootstocks cause compact growth, grafts are low and this allows making an excellent shape of the crown, to be suitable for growing in pots. The used rootstocks are trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon') and Volkamer lemon, Citrus volkameriana. Trifoliate orange is frost-hardy to -25°C, and significantly increases the cold resistance of plants grafted on it.

Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' , Heavenly bamboo, Sacred bamboo

This variety of Nandina has compact growth and sparkling red foliage.

Nandina is evergreen and cold-resistant shrub with beautiful red berries and interesting color of leaves. Its bloom in summer is nondescript, but subsequently formed fruits, give gentle beauty of the plants until late autumn.

In our botanical garden, Nandina plants overwintered without a problem in several freezing winters since 2001 at temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius.

A superb form of Italian cypress with fine erect foliage, fresh green colour and compact crown. This is a distinctive very narrow conical conifer.

Blue Pacific is attractive with its fragrant, awl-shaped, blue-green pointed needles. It grows to a height of 15-20 cm and a width of up to 1.5 m. It is used to prevent erosion and is suitable for landscaping rocky places and rock gardens. It spreads out on all types of soil and climate conditions.

These are deciduous azaleas that can be grown outdoors in most areas in Bulgaria .

They do not tolerate limestone, so they would feel best in beech and low altitude coniferous forest.

In the garden a partial shade or eastern exposure must be provided.

The soil pH+ must be acidic. This is accomplished by regularly adding ferrous sulfate. Azaleas are moisture-loving, but their soil must be well draining. They do not tolerate waterlogging .

By following these simple rules, your Azalia will bloom profusely each year in April.

Cedrus atlantica glauca, Grafted Atlas Cedar

These are specially grafted plants, that have intense silver color.

Phyllostachys  'Spectabilis', Giant  bamboo

This giant bamboo is one of the most cold hardy of the large bamboos and is a very popular bamboo. It could reach up to 16 m.

The Golden bamboo is cold resistant down to at least -18°C, but its rhizome could survive after at least -25°C. However, in colder areas, where temperatures regularily drop below -18°C, this bamboo could hardly get taller than 8-10 meters, after many years. In areas outside of the temperature inversions in southern Bulgaria, the Golden  bamboo could reach its full potential and more than 12 meters of height.

It is important to regularily water and fertilize the bamboo. This bamboo tolerates lime soil quite well.

Alaska Green Holly is a self-pollinated female species. The leaves are shiny green, spherical and spiny. The plants grow in the form of a closely erect, evergreen tree or evergreen hedge. The flowers are tiny with white color and it becomes a very bright red fruits, which are a source of food for the birds during the winter. The fruit can also be used for Christmas decorations on wreaths and more. The species is the most resistant one to bad weather and atmospheric pollution.

An evergreen coniferous tree that reaches 45 m in height and has a trunk diameter of up to 3 m. Its crown is conical in the first years of growth, becoming more branched as it ages.

Cold-resistant, undemanding to the soil. Does not like waterlogging.
