Artocarpus heterophyllus, Jackfruit
Jackfruit is a tropical fruit tree from the mullberry family. This is the same family that the fig and mulberry fall into.
Jackfruit fruits are huge, forming directly on the stem or on the thick branches. The taste is exotic and very pleasant, and the fruits perfectly tolerate freezing and long storage in the freezer.
The plants bloom after 3-4 years, and the experience in Bulgaria shows that flowering occurs at the same time in our country, even when growing in pots. The pot must be large enough (at least 35-40 liters) and the plant must be well growing, well branched and at least 1.5 meters tall to flower. Jackfruit grows quite quickly and often reaches the required size for flowering already in the second year. Plants from seed and grafted plants usually flower after the same time. For the first year or two, only male flowers appear, then female flowers also appear and fruiting begins. One plant is enough because it pollinates itself.
Jackfruit has no specific growing requirements. Standard care is taken, watching out for chlorosis, mites or scales. A well-grown plant, it grows very quickly. If the growth is poor, then there is some problem and it needs to be found out what it is. Temperatures in winter should not fall below +15 degrees Celsius.
