The Cycads are not a true palms, they are ancient gymnospermous plants, contemporary of the dinosaurus.

A huge fallacy about the King Sago is that they are difficult and demanding plants. This fallacy is supported by the wrong growing advices, that people receive at the flower shops.

The King Sago is a very easy to grow plant. What they need is regular watering and fertilizing. During the summer they need to be moved outside to a very bright light and should get at least 2-3 hours direct sun. During the winter they should be stored in a cool place with plenty of light.

The main problems with Cycads in pot are due to low light or too little water.

Japanese Hardy Banana

This is not a palm. Bananas are a monocotyledonous family of plants (Musaceae), that are closer to the grasses and have nothing to do with palms. From a botanical point of view, these are giant grasses. They develop a strong underground root mass called rhizome.

Musa basjoo is world famous as the cold hardiest banana. Like any other banana, its leaves will die off at temperatures below -2°C and trunks are damaged at temperatures below -7 to -8°C. But rhizome successfully overwinters in the ground and starts a new clump next spring. According to our experience, with an elementary and simple protection the rhizome will survive an air temperature below -25°C and start a new plant in early April.

Bananas grow very fast. Even after complete freezing of the green parts, in just a single growing season it will re-grow as a small banana forest with 3 to 5 meters of height. Of course, under the bananas the shade is thick.

During the period 1950-1990, in Bulgaria were made many experiments with subtropical fruit crops. Quite a few experimental stations were created throughout the country and they had big plantations of tangerines, olives, pomegranates, figs, persimmons, pistachios and others.

In these plantations, the most valuable varieties were tested and selected and the most essential was their cold tolerance. Varieties of a whole "Eastern bloc" were delivered - from Russia to Afghanistan. After political changes, all these plantations were abandoned. Some were destroyed, others were left to run wild without any care.

During our visits to these places, we have selected the most durable and valuable varieties, that not only had excellent fruit, but were fairly dry and frost tolerant to survive a decade after abandonment. Of the former plantation with pomegranate near Lozenets (Bourgas), we managed to save two varieties with excellent fruits with high sugar content and very good taste. Unfortunately, their names are unknown. Therefore we are presenting them as variety 1 and variety 2.

Azalea sp., cold hardy deciduous Azalea

These are deciduous azaleas that can be grown outdoors in most areas in Bulgaria .

They do not tolerate limestone, so they would feel best in beech and low altitude coniferous forest.

In the garden a partial shade or eastern exposure must be provided.

The soil pH+ must be acidic. This is accomplished by regularly adding ferrous sulfate. Azaleas are moisture-loving, but their soil must be well draining. They do not tolerate waterlogging .

By following these simple rules, your Azalia will bloom profusely each year in April.

Lagerstroemia indica 'Caroline Beauty', Crape Myrtle

Crape myrtle is gentle little tree with very beautiful flowers. It is very cold hardy. It grows on the equator, but it also grows perfect in areas with cold winters like Bulgaria. This tree could reach 7-8 m height, but it is usually trimmed to maintain a shrub or a small tree, up to 3-4 m.

Lagerstroemia indica 'Berlingot Menthe', Crape Myrtle

Crape myrtle is gentle little tree with very beautiful flowers. It is very cold hardy. It grows on the equator, but it also grows perfect in areas with cold winters like Bulgaria. This tree could reach 7-8 m height, but it is usually trimmed to maintain a shrub or a small tree, up to 3-4 m.

The Mexican Fan Palm is among the fastest growing palms. If planted in the ground in south Bulgaria, a small plant of total size of one meter will easily grow to a meter of trunk with base circumference of more than a meter. And this in just 3-4 years.

The Canary Island Date Palm comes from deserted areas on the Canary islands. Despite it's powerful root system, it does not tolerate drought, when grown in pot. This is easily visible, when the leaf tips start to turn yellow and dry. In winter it should be kept cool, down to 0 degrees Celsius. It needs much sun to be able to develop it's full glory. If the surrounding air is very dry, this palm will still thrive, as long as it is watered regularly. 

This size of Date palm has a trunk circumference of about 230-250 cm!

Washingtonia robusta seeds, Mexican Fan Palm 20 fresh seeds

These seeds were collected from the oldest Washingtonia robusta palms, growing in Bulgaria. The two trees were planted by us in 2001 with 3 metres of trunk. They have been protected each winter and since then they grown additional 6 metres of trunk. This is how they were looking on December 18 2015, right before we started protecting them. One of the palms was transplanted in spring a few meters away due to the restaurant's new building construnction.

This is a very interesting variety, that we found about 15 years ago in a private garden in the town of Assenovgrad, Bulgaria. It may be of Greek origin. Until we are able to determine its eventual official name, we will use the working name Hardy Yellow. This variety performed better or the same as Michurinska-10 during the freezing February 2012 when it overwintered with no damage in our experimental field.

The fruits are large, 100-120 gr, its flesh is amber, sweet and juicy. Thy are not very durable and it is recommended to consume them not far from the place of production. There are two abundant crops.

In summary, this is a great fig variety with delicious fruits.

Bird of Paradise. This African plant is very easy to grow in pots. The plants have been produced at our nursery in Plovdiv. They are drought resistant, but in summer love regular and heavy irrigations. They prefer direct sun and tolerate it without problems.

Strelitzias can be kept for a long time without replanting, if you feed them regularly. From the base of the stem new shoots will appear, that may be separated or left for the formation of a dense crown.

Magnolias take many years to bloom from seed. Our evergreen Magnolias are grafted and bloom immediately or next summer. Moreover, the variety Gallisoniensis has a beautiful dark green leaves. These are Magnolias, that you have probably seen everywhere in Italy and France.

These Magnolias grow without any problems anywhere in southern Bulgaria and along the Black Sea coast. But they will grow in quite a few places in Sofia and northern Bulgaria.

Brunswick is a popular variety worldwide and probably the second most popular variety in Bulgaria!

It produces two crops - first crop (June to July), and the main crop (August to October). As with all fig varieties pollinated fruits are of much higher quality. The fruit taste is delicious, juicy and with high sugar content. In some years the fruits tend to split, depending on weather conditions.

This fig variety has very good cold tolerance and that is why it is so popular in Bulgaria. It is especially often found around Varna and Stambolijski, where they grow in almost each yard.

Citrus x Tangelo Nova from Botanical Garden - Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Tangelo varieties are hybrids between Tangerine (Citrus reticulata) and Pomelo or Grapefruit. Hybrid Nova is created from a cross between Tangerine Clementine and Tangelo variety Orlando. Fruits are deep orange. The flesh is firm, juicy and flavorful, with a very pleasant and specific taste.

Characteristic of the fruit of Tangelo Nova are:

•      - strong flavor
•      - juicy and with high sugar content
•      - moderate acidity
•      - thin peel
•      - 12 to 16 segments
•      - ripen in December - January
•      - seedless or with a few seeds

For a good crop, Tangelo Nova needs cross-pollination with other citrus species or variety.

Red leaved plum, very useful and well known tree with red leaves. It si widely used as an accent in the plant groups.

Grafted white birch, imported from Italy. It has wither bark. Suitable for planting outside all year round.

This is probably the most beautiful flowering tree!

No wonder, why in Japan they write poetry about these trees. Their flowers are so gentle and beautiful, that whoever seen them live, will never forget.

The Red Orange, or Blood orange, first appeared on the island of Sicily. It was believed that the red color of meat and unique taste are due to the unique climate in Sicily and the volcanic soils. The fruits ripen from February to April.
Today mainly several varieties are growing, and are already found in other parts of Italy as well as Greece and Spain .

Valencia variety ripens in April and May. This is the most often used variety for fresh or canned juices. The taste of the fruit is slightly sour.

They can hang on the tree for several months ripening, so most people usually prefer to keep them as ornamental. True Myrtle is a popular evergreen Mediterranean shrub with aromatic leaves. It is a part of the Mediterranean forests (Maquis). For successful overwintering it needs some protection also in south Bulgaria.

Laurel plants of our new production for this season. These plants are perfect for hedges or a solitaire plants in southern Bulgaria. In northern parts they need protection or in a very cold winter will freeze to the ground.

Trachycarpus 'Bulgaria', 100 fresh seeds packet

The seeds were collected from genuine exemplars of Trachycarpus 'Bulgaria' located in Assenovgrad, near Plovdiv. They have never seen any protection during the winters. The owner Kiril Donov planted the palms back in 1999 from seeds, collected from the famous genuine exemplars, growing in front of the police station in the Sunny beach resort, near the Black Sea coast.

Originally, these parent palms have male parent from Sochi, Russia and the female parent was from the museum palms in Plovdiv. The male parent from Sochi was Trachycarpus excelsa, as described in the Russian scientific literature. Today Trachycarpus excelsa is clasified inside the species Trachycarpus fortunei.

The palms in Bulgaria experience extremely freezing weather almost each winter. Still, they seed freely around the mother plant's bases. When the small seedlings survive, they develop the cold hardiness in the future generations.

Please note, that these seeds are only available from Christmas until the end of March each year! The usual germination is between 80-95 %.

Bougainvillea glabra 'Snow White', Bougainvillea, white

There is no other plant to bloom so profusely, with such bright colors. All that Bougainvillea needs is sun and warmth. With enough sunlight and heat, it will bloom all year round.

Phoenix roebelenii, Pigmy Date Palm, Miniature Date Palm

The Pigmy Date palm is perfect for growing in pot.

It is a member of the genus of the Date palm. In internet it is often stated as cold hardy to -6 degrees Celsius, but in Europe it only grows in zone 10 and rarely in zone 9b. This palm is of tropical origin and it needs higher temperatures to thrive, not just higher minimums.

This Trachycarpus species is close to the regular Trachycarpus fortunei in terms of cold hardiness. It grows with just a little protection in places in southern Bulgaria, located outside the winter freezing inversions. It has very beautiful and hard leaves, that are very wind resistant.

About growing requirements it is like the regular Trachycarpus fortunei.

The European Fan Palm is the only palm, that is of European origin. It grows in dry and rocky areas, where it experiences long summers with high temperatures and much sun. If there is a palm that will easily recover in pot after being forgotten and not watered in time, this is the Chamaerops. It will take dry air, dust and even somewhat lower light.

This palm could stay in the same pot for many years.

For optimal growth it should be moved outside in summer and watered abundantly.

In winter it needs cool temperatures, below +10°C. It will also grow in open ground in some areas of Bulgaria.

The Mexican Fan Palm is among the fastest growing palms. If planted in the ground in south Bulgaria, a plant of the size like these on the picture will easily grow a meter of trunk with base circumference of more than a meter. And this in just 3-4 years.

An exceptionally easy palm to grow, both in the open ground or in pot.

Phoenix canariensis, Canary Island Date Palm, 70-90 cm, pot 14 cm

The Canary Island Date Palm comes from deserted areas on the Canary islands. Despite it's powerful root system, it does not tolerate drought, when grown in pot. This is easily visible, when the leaf tips start to turn yellow and dry. In winter it should be kept cool, down to 0 degrees Celsius. It needs much sun to be able to develop it's full glory. If the surrounding air is very dry, this palm will still thrive, as long as it is watered regularly. 

If you want this palm to look its best and to grow fast, you need to move it to a bigger pot. When outside in summer, you need to water every day!
