Durian (Durio zibethinus)
Two-Year-Old Plants, Grown in Assenovgrad, Bulgaria (EU)
The durian is perhaps the most legendary tropical tree – in its homeland it is called “the king of fruits.” Its fruits are famous for their strong aroma, which some people find unbearable, while others describe as rich and pleasant. When it comes to taste, however, durian stands at the very top of every ranking, earning the undisputed title “King of All Fruits.”
Durian is a plant of the equatorial climate, and you should know from the very beginning that it is one of the most difficult plants to grow in our conditions. It is not suitable for beginners and is recommended only for growers with serious experience in rare and demanding tropical species.
The plants offered for sale are two years old, grown in Asenovgrad from Thai seeds of the Kan Yao (Kan Yao) cultivar. These are healthy, well-established plants that have already passed the most delicate stage after germination and therefore have a higher chance of successful development.
Growing requirements:
-
Constant warmth – year-round between 25–32°C, without chilling or excessive heat. Eternal summer, just like at the equator. Our plants, however, have adapted to tolerate slightly lower winter temperatures, around 22–24°C.
-
High humidity (70–90%) – ideally in a home greenhouse, or in a room with humidifiers and aquariums. Low air humidity is the most common reason for leaf dieback.
-
Bright but filtered light – loves tropical sun, but not direct midday rays.
-
Soil – light, rich, and well-draining.
-
Watering – regular and careful; the substrate should not dry out completely, but also must not remain waterlogged.
Suitable for:
-
Collectors of rare tropical plants.
-
Growers already cultivating ultra-tropical fruit trees such as rambutan, mangosteen, or similar species.
-
Enthusiasts with conditions close to a tropical climate.
If you are able to provide the proper environment, then you may consider owning a durian.
A durian plant is an exceptional rarity in temperate regions – a living equatorial legend. It is not for everyone, but for true enthusiasts, it is both a challenge and a privilege to grow a living durian at home.
